‘CIRCLES IN 2D OR 3D’
The Bruges Kantcentrum vzw (non-profit organisation), 16 Balstraat, 8000 Bruges, Belgium, is organising an international competition, ‘Circles in 2D or 3D’ with the aim of stimulating creation of modern and contemporary lace in adults and children.
COMPETITION RULES
1. a. The competition is open to anyone aged over 18, whether they live in Belgium or overseas, with the exception of the members of the Kantcentrum Management Committee, members of staff at the Kantcentrum and members of the jury.
b. A separate category for young people is open to anyone aged 8 to 18.
2. The lace submitted must be completely original and be designed and worked by the participant him/herself.
3. The work must not have been included previously in other competitions, nor exhibited nor published, either in part or as a whole.
4. Material and colours: cotton, linen, silk and any other natural or synthetic material in any colours are permitted, as are combinations of materials and colours. There are no restrictions on the size of the work.
5. Each participant can only submit one piece of work.
6. By taking part in the competition, the participant authorises the Bruges Kantcentrum non-profit organisation to take any necessary photos. It will acquire ownership of these photos for use in its publications, in which case the name of the lace maker will always be credited.
7. The work submitted will be judged by a competent jury, made up of art and lace experts, with regard to its originality, artistic level, relevance to contemporary lace and technical excellence.
The jury's decision will be final.
8. The winner will be awarded a voucher for one or several courses organised by the Bruges Kantcentrum non-profit organisation, to a value of €200. The winner in the category for young people will receive a €50 voucher to use in our shop for materials.
9. Participants' submissions will be exhibited during the 2025 “Lace Days”, which will run from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 August 2025 inclusive. During the exhibition a public vote will be held. The winner of the public vote will be awarded a voucher for one or several courses organised by the Bruges Kantcentrum non-profit organisation, to a value of €100.
10. The prizes will be presented at the close of the exhibition on Sunday 17 August 2025 at 16.00hrs.
11. In order to participate, a copy of the entry form must be received at the Kantcentrum Lace Centre by midday on Monday 1 March 2025 latest (delivered by hand, fax, letter or e-mail). An example of the entry form is included with these rules. All entry forms received after the deadline will not be valid. All participants will receive a confirmation of receipt of their form.
12. All pieces of work must be in the possession of the Kantcentrum Bruges Kantcentrum non-profit organisation by 17.00hrs on 1 July 2025 latest. They may be sent or hand delivered to the Kantcentrum. Any piece of work received after this date will not be included in the competition.
13. Despatch costs are at the expense of the participant.
14. Expenses will not be reimbursed.
15. If the work is sent by post, participants must pack it adequately and suitably for posting.
16. The submission must bear a label showing the name of the lace work. The work should be accompanied by a sealed envelope giving the title of the lace (as shown on the label). The envelope must contain the following documents:
o A colour photo to permit the lace work to be identified. On the reverse of the photo the following information about the participant should be noted: surname and first name, full adddress, telephone or mobile phone number and e-mail address (which should match the details on the entry form sent previously).
o A brief description of the work including its title (as shown on the label and envelope), the materials and techniques used.
o Instructions for displaying the work (e.g. markings showing top and bottom)
17. The pieces of work can be collected between 21 August and 15 September 2025 at the Kantcentrum in Bruges, on presentation of proof of identity and a photo identical to the one previously included in the envelope for identification.
18. Pieces of work not collected before 15 September 2025 will be sent back at the participant's expense.
19. By taking part in the competition, the participant accepts the conditions set out in these regulations. Challenges arising from items not laid down in these competition rules will be resolved by the Board of the Bruges Kantcentrum non-profit organisation within 48 hours of receipt. Any amendments or clarifications of the competition rules which result from challenges will be announced on the competition web page.
